Well, we all knew that Joe Biden would be the candidate from the Democrats side. This really was a moment for the party to show off their man to the nation while Joe Biden has been a big political figure here for more than 50 years there was a sense in his camp that many voters didn't know enough about Joe Biden the man and his past this was a moment for them to define that story before Donald Trump and his attack dogs move in and do that for them just as they so successfully did in casting Hillary Clinton as a figure to dislike and distrust in 2016. so what we saw last night across the board was a concerted effort to humanize Joe Biden one thing to note this was very much the old democratic guard on display it was Clinton Kerry and Schumer there was very little time allotted to the rising stars in the party people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who was only given 96 seconds in the lineup clearly the Democrats have decided that at this time and with this president it's not the moment to lurch to the left vice president. 

Joe Biden has officially been nominated as our candidate for president of the united states as democrats joined with virtual cheers across America Joe Biden officially became the party's presidential candidate it wasn't with the usual fanfare but the moment in a Delaware Public School library alongside his wife and grandkids was none the less "hugely significant thank you very very much from the bottom of my heart thank you thank you thank you" set the stage for one of the hottest political battles in modern times pitting 77-year-old Biden against 74-year-old Donald Trump in the race for the white house.

The roll call of votes typically held inside the convention centre was instead conducted remotely due to COVID a quirky cross between u.s virtual road trip. It shouldn't have worked but it did and cleverly cast the democrats as the party of unity in contrast to trump's division this fight but the real business of the night was painting a picture of joe humanizing the man behind the mask who the democrats want voters to see as one of them from workers like the lift operator said "joe biden has room in his heart for more than just himself" to democratic grandees like john kerry "joe's moral compass is always pointed in the right direction" and even prominent republicans like colin Powell "with joe biden in the white house you will never doubt that he will stand with our friends and stand up to our adversaries" never the other way around it was a friendship that shouldn't have worked the contrast with donald trump reached an emotional climax as in his words the late republican senator john mccain described the deep bond between the two and an era when politicians dared cross the political divide to compromise "thank you most of all for your friendship my life and the lives of many have been enriched by it"  but it was his wife jill who painted the most intimate picture of the night of joe as a man who overcame personal tragedy after the loss of his wife and daughter in a car crash in 1972 and the death of one of his two sons to brain cancer in 2015.  Dr Jill Biden said "four days after beau's funeral I watched joe shave and put on the suit I saw him steal himself in the mirror take a breath put his shoulders back and walk out into a world empty of our son he went back to work that's just who he is" if the public didn't know enough about joe Biden yesterday today they have the measure of the man who hopes to defeat president trump no doubt a theme that will continue when his vice president pick Kamala Harris accepts her nomination in this most unconventional of conventions tonight well
