NDPS not only prohibited Ganja but criminalized it as well- Under Section 20 of NDPS, 10 years of imprisonment was fined for weed cultivation, whereas research proves Ganja is a safe drug and we cannot compare it with Acid and LSD. America is legalizing weed as well 13 states in the US have legalized recreational cannabis and 35 states have legalized medicinal cannabis there. Even Canada has legalized Cannabis but India is confused and hypocrite when it comes to cannabis. India consumes cannabis in large quantities, In fact, 400 out of 670 districts cultivate Ganja and almost 30 million people in India consume cannabis.

Maneka Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor have already asked for Marijuana legalization. In fact, a private member bill asked for the same in 2017, Ramdev's Patanjali is against criminalising marijuana Acharya Balakrishna says it is a good economic opportunity for the country?

SHOULD INDIA LEGALIZE CANNABIS?

There are many disadvantages of legalizing cannabis too, Researches have found cannabis can lead to schizophrenia and anxiety issues It is also linked with pnemonia and respiratory diseases. But legalization also has many benefits, our economy would benefit a lot, as a result, Delhi can get 725 crore in tax benefits with weed legalization. Cannabis market will grow upto 125 billion dollars in the next five years. Weed smoking also has many medical benefits Ministry of Ayush research found cannabis helpful in cancer patients It can also help in diseases like insomnia and HIV. But what about cannabis addiction Science says marijuana addiction rate is 9%, compared to 16% of alcohol.

We do not want immediate legalization weed but at least we want a debate on cannabis The future of weed legalization in India remains dismal.
